Dexter Christenberry, retired Special Agent Federal Bureau of Investigation and longtime prominent Knoxville attorney died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. He was 91. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee on January 16, 1917 the youngest child of Dr. and Mrs. Henry Edward Christenberry, Sr. He graduated from Knoxville High School, and attended the University of Tennessee earning Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, member of the University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Marching Band, manager of the 1938/1939 University of Tennessee Basketball Team, editor of the Volunteer Yearbook and lettered in swimming. After passing the bar, he worked for TVA in the legal department. In 1941 he joined the FBI as a special agent serving in Washington, D.C., Charlotte, NC, Greensboro, NC, Durham, NC, and Bowling Green, KY. While at the Bowling Green office he captured the first German prisoner of war in the United States. He retired from the FBI in 1945 and returned to Knoxville to form the law firm of Andrews, Christenberry and Mann. He was a member of the American, Tennessee, and Knoxville Bar Associations. Being also a Gideon, Dexter was a member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville for 81 years where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, and is the only remaining Life Deacon. He was a charter member and chairman of the East Tennessee Chapter of former Special Agents of the FBI; lifelong member of the Knoxville Republican party; President of the Volunteers of America Advisory Board serving the board for more than 20 years; founder and developer of Bays Mountain Golf and Country Club; troop leader of the Boy Scouts of America; life member of the Knoxville Elks Lodge #160; former president of the Tennessee Society of Sons of the Revolution; charter member of European Society of Sons of the Revolution; member of the Sovereign Colonial Society; member of Somerset chapter of Magna Charter Barons; member of Colonial Order of the Crown; member of the Plantagenet Society; member of Americans of Royal Decent, Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, and a member of the Men’s Cotillion. Preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H.E. Christenberry, Sr.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. H.E. Christenberry, Jr., Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Christenberry; sisters, Carol Greer and Maxine Preas; granddaughter, Yvette Christenberry; and a son-in-law, Robert Baker Latta. He is survived by his loving and most devoted wife, Christine Dean Christenberry of Knoxville; children and their spouses, Linda Christenberry of Seymour; Dexter Christenberry, Jr. of Piney Flats; Jay G. Christenberry of Seymour; Stuart Christenberry of Lake Worth, FL, Diane Latta of White Oak, PA; Lynn Waddell and husband Robert of Knoxville; and Karen Stimming and husband William of Brentwood, CA; 16 grandchildren, Jed Carter and wife Lori of Gainesville, GA, Dal Christenberry an d wife Paige of Knoxville, Scott Christenberry and wife Ashley of Knoxville, Amy Hickman of Knoxville, Chance Christenberry of Piney Flats, Vanessa Morel and husband Pierre of McClean, VA, Tate Pannabecker of Richmond, VA, Ryan Christenberry of Barnstable, MS, Erin Christenberry and wife Kimberly of Dothan, AL, Nichole Latta of White Oak, PA, Robert B. Latta of White Oak, PA, Forest Waddell of Knoxville, Laura Waddell of Knoxville, Russell Waddell of Knoxville, Tyler Waddell of Knoxville, and Christopher Stimming of Brentwood, CA; 7 great-grandchildren, Caroline and Lilly Claire Morel, Jake and Hunter Carter, Hyatt and Dallas Christenberry, and Cameron Reagan Christenberry; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 16, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Knoxville with Reverend Dave Ward officiating and a eulogy given by The Honorable Judge John Rosson. Interment will immediately follow the service in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Forest Waddell, Tyler Waddell, Russell Waddell, Robert Waddell, Robert Baker Latta, Dal Christenberry, Jed Carter, Scott Christenberry, Erin Christenberry, and Charles Carroll. Honorary pallbearers will be John Mann, Frank Venable, Charles Higdon, Nelson Van Wie, Charlie Hobbs, the Deacon Board of First Baptist Church, Members of the Joe Goddard Sunday School Class, Members of the Knoxville Bar Association, and the Tennessee Society of Sons of the Revolution Board.
