June Board of Managers Meeting

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

The Secretary was absent, so we had no minutes to approve. The registrar reported three candidates for new members who were approved. Security for the Bell Ringing in Nashville is being provided by two members of the State Legislature personally because no State funds were available. A motion to send a letter of thanks to these legislators passed. The Treasurer recommended that we not renew our CD’s because of the extremely low interest rate, and explore the other options for consideration at the next meeting. Nine board members indicated that they would research the options and report at the next meeting. A motion was passed to allow the treasurer to not renew the CD’s and deposit the money in a regular account for a future decision. David Whaley gave a historical report on the Battle of Bunker Hill.
The Roane County Chapter reported a successful Celebration at Fort Southwest Point, resulting in ten new prospective members. Public attendance was small, so next year the chapter intends to involve the Churches in the event. The stump speeches by the local politicians was a high point. A recommendation that the cannon be fired more frequently was heard.
The Summer Meeting of the Tennessee Society will be on Saturday, August 14 at the Museum of Appalachia. There will be a catered lunch of chicken or beef, and attendees will be able to tour the museum, especially the Revolutionary War exhibit on the second floor of the Hall of Fame building. The cost will be $20.
Terry Davenport reported on the Flag Day Parade and Ceremony in New York City. Terry recommended that any member who can attend the event in the future. Dr. Simpson still talks about the hospitality of the Tennessee Society.
Next meeting will be July 15.

April Board of Managers meeting

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The Board of Managers met at the Fountain City Library. They discussed the possibility of admitting members based on DNA, especially for those who are adopted. A flintlock match has been suggested. It is being planned for a Monday in the fall at the range on Rifle Range road. The Board approved a resolution to restore to membership those who are delinquent in their dues by paying only the current years dues. This is a one-time offer, and is only because of the change to the constitution that removes from membership anyone who has not paid current years dues by December, instead of waiting until they are two years in arrears.

January Board of Managers Meeting

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

At the January meeting of the Tennessee Society Board of Managers a resolution was passed indicating that the Board intends that the Rifleman be published and distributed quarterly, and on time and within budget.

November Board of Managers Meeting

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

The Registrar reported that we are losing members far faster than we are gaining new members. Each and every member is encouraged to recruit family and friends to join the Society. Joining a local chapter (or forming one if there is not one in your county) is the best way to become an active member.

The State Society has only about 50 active members. The other 650 members rarely, if ever, participate in the events of the Society. For those members, the Rifleman is an important benefit of membership. Recognizing this, the board passed a resolution directing that the Rifleman be published quarterly.

The Tennessee Society standing rules have not been updated for some time. The Board asked that the previous edition of the rules be distributed to each board member, and additions or corrections be collected for consideration at the January meeting of the Board. Once the standing rules are approved by the Board, copies will be made for distribution.

Christmas Celebration – Charles Carroll, president of the European Society, plans to host a special party for the Officers, members of the Board of Managers, and active members of the Tennessee Society on December 11. Information about this event may be obtained from Charles, or from Chris Christenberry.

A pewter plate with a picture of the Battle of Bunker Hill, a Sheridan Silver bowl replica of Paul Revere art work, and an 1863 George Washington postal cover will be on the silent auction. The Live Auction will have a Martha Washington plate by Taylor Smith Taylor from the early 30’s, an 1863 Confederate George Washington stamp, and a full/queen hand stitched quilt from about 1950.

Five new members were approved.

The lack of communication with the members was noted, especially with respect to the notice of the Annual Meeting. Any member can leave a comment in this blog, and the news will be presented here. Unfortunately most of the comments so far have come from spammers, and they have been rejected.

At noon on June 6 a Patriotic ceremony commemorating Tennessee, “Home Sweet Home to Me”, McMinn County and Joseph McMinn will be held at the Shiloh Presbyterian Cemetery in Calhoun, Tennessee.
